Featured tomato: Garden peach

Garden Peach.  This is the first year I've grown this tomato. I traded tomato seeds with someone and this is one of the varieties I got. This is one of the most accurately named tomatoes. It really does look like a yellow peach! It ripens yellow with a rosy blush, it is shaped like a peach, AND it is fuzzy. It tastes like a tomato, mild with a good mix of sweet and tang, leaning toward the sweet side. Mine stayed small to medium in size and it has been very productive. Makes a good tomato for fresh eating.

Braun pflaume. Russian variety. Why a German name with a Russian variety? I traded seeds with a Russian woman in Germany. Her parents grew them at their dachau in Russia. I can read some German, no Russian so she put the name on the packet in German for me and that is what I have always called them. What's so special about heirloom tomatoes? The idea that an heirloom is a variety that has been grown by generations and passed down from person to person is really very fascinating. And they just taste better. They are naturally a little more acidic so are better for canning. I love this particular variety because makes a rich, dark sauce and it's now been found that the black tomatoes are better for you as far as being higher in anti-cancer antioxidants. The size of these tomatoes are perfect if you have a tomato processor like a Victorio strainer. No need to cut these tomatoes, just wash, remove the stem ends and drop in the processor.

Chocolate cherry tomato. I've seen a lot of claims for the blackest tomato but I think the little Chocolate Cherry wins hands down. The inset picture shows it compared to a red tomato. It is dark, rich brown with green seed gel. It is a sweet little jolly to pop in your mouth when working in the garden. And, it's healthier than red tomatoes because it is higher in antioxidants than red ones. These are great on a vegetable dip platter and it really looks attractive if you have a mix of black, red, white, green, and yellow cherry type tomatoes This is an indeterminate tomato and the fruit is borne in clusters of 8 or so.
