Featured tomato: San Francisco Fog

 This indeterminate plant bears small to medium size tomatoes that are red and tasty. It is a variety I got from an Australian gentleman last year. It should be able to set and ripen fruit if the weather is cool, foggy, and cloudy. We've had a hot, humid summer and it's doing just great as well. Very juicy fruit.

Featured tomato: Banjan roomi

Banjan roomi. This is the first year I've grown this tomato. I traded tomato seeds with someone and this is one of the varieties I got. I was told it is a Middle Eastern variety. Sorry, I've forgotten to take a picture of it, but it is red, slightly pleated, flattened, and of small to medium size. It has been very productive...especially impressive because we had 100 degree weather for a week and it still managed to set blossoms. The taste is good, like a tomato ought to taste and could be used for fresh eating as well as for sauce.

Featured tomato: Tondino

Italian Tondino maremmano. Italian variety of tomato. It is an excellent sauce tomato from the center of Italy. It bears 3 oz fruit all through the summer. It is a determinate variety that may not require staking and would be suitable for containers.

Featured tomato: Great white

Great White. This is an indeterminate plant with beefsteak type white tomato.  It is a meaty tomato that has a creamy texture. Can weigh up to one pound with plenty of feeding and water, but usually stays under a pound. A colorful addition to salads, sandwiches, and slicing. One of those old time favorites.

Featured tomato: Brown Berry

Brown Berry  is a sweet little jolly to pop in your mouth when working in the garden. It is dark brown, somewhat like Chocolate Cherry. It bears well and the flavor is excellent. Black tomatoes are healthier than red tomatoes because it is higher in antioxidants than red ones. These are great on a vegetable dip platter and it really looks attractive if you have a mix of black, red, white, green, and yellow cherry type tomatoes This is an indeterminate tomato and the fruit is borne in clusters of 8 or so.

Featured tomato: Tlacalula pink

This Aztec variety is an indeterminate plant which bears small to medium size tomatoes that are very flavorful. The predominate shape is like a pouch. It has one of the most complex flavors I have ever tasted in a tomato. I almost want to say there is a hint of floral. Makes an interesting addition to summer salads, sandwiches and home made fresh salsa...especially mixed with red, white, yellow, pink, and black tomatoes. What's so special about heirloom tomatoes? The idea that an heirloom is a variety that has been grown by generations and passed down from person to person is really very fascinating.

Featured tomato: yellow pear

Yellow Pear,  This indeterminate plant bears a multitude of cherry size, sweet, mild, yellow, pear shaped fruit. The best part is, they are a great vegetable platter and dip veggie. It all ready sports a handle!  The fruit is about 1-2" long . These are great favorites with kids because they have a handle. What's so special about heirloom tomatoes?  The idea that an heirloom is a  variety that has been grown by generations and passed down from person to person is really very fascinating. And they just taste better.

White currant It is a good grower, bears loads of tiny tomatoes the size of a woman's thumbnail or a dime. The tomato itself has a tart/sweetness that is difficult to describe. Very juicy and excellent in salads or just eating while out in the garden. Indeterminate.

Featured tomato: Montseraat

Montserrat.. This will be the first year I have grown these tomatoes so I will only be able to tell you what I have read about them. The fruit is red which is flattened and oblate. It also has pleats like an accordion, but somewhat twisted. Very unusual and very rare. It has good flavor.

Featured tomato: Green Giant

Green Giant. This indeterminate plant bears larger green tomatoes. The one in the picture is 10 oz. It managed to grow that large even with the lousy, rainy summer we had. As you can see from the second picture, they are very meaty with few seeds. Green tomatoes are full of flavor. Out of all the tomatoes, I think they taste best, not as acidic as red tomatoes. Makes an interesting addition to summer salads, sandwiches and home made fresh salsa...especially mixed with red, white, yellow, pink, and black tomatoes.

Oaxacan Pink, Mexican Oaxacan Indian variety. This indeterminate plant bears small to medium size tomatoes that are very flavorful. Pink, very juicy, and flavorful. Featured tomato: Feuerwerk

Feuerwerk, Germany,This indeterminate plant bears medium to large size tomatoes that are very flavorful. Even the meat is tasty and most often all the taste is in the gel around the seeds. It has flavor that can stand up to mayo. The patterns of gold stripes often look like a chrysanthemum firework and it seems no two tomatoes look alike . Makes an interesting addition to summer salads, sandwiches and home made fresh salsa...especially mixed with red, white, yellow, pink, and black tomatoes.

Green Grape. This is an indeterminate plant with grape shaped cherry tomatoes that ripen lime green. It is a very flavorful tomato with a complex, fruity flavor. Bears well with fruit coming in trusses of 6-8. Great on a vegetable dip platter with white, red, yellow, orange, and black cherry tomatoes. Great for garden grazing as well.

Skorspelka This is an indeterminate plant with red, medium, round fruit. Good flavor, good production, and great for eating fresh sliced and in salads. Hails from Russia.

Woodle Orange. I love the name of this tomato.It does bear large, round orange fruit abundantly on indeterminate plants. Tasty if somewhat mild (less acidic). Great addition to fresh salsa and salads. Limited quantity.

Featured tomato: Schemmig Striped Hollow

Schemmig Striped Hollow. German heirloom. This is one of my more interesting varieties. It is somewhat like a pepper inside. The top can be sliced off and the seeds are stuck in the center for easy removal. There is very little meat inside but the walls are nice and thick for stuffing. It is red with gold stripes, The tomato themselves are medium in size. A perfect serving for a stuffed tomato. Has been productive for me. Interesting flavor.

Feature tomato: Liguria

TOMATO seeds, LIGURIA, Italian sauce tomato, 30 seeds, red pear

Liguria. I bought these seeds from a man in Slovenia. He only described them as incredibly sweet, highly productive and vigorous, suitable for greenhouse production and in the field. I believe it to be a variety from Italy as there is a region called Liguria. It is a dumpy, oblate spheroid...larger on the bottom than the top and very red. It is great for sauce though it is sweeter than most sauce tomatoes. I was intrigued by the shape so, because I tend to be obsessive/compulsive about collecting tomatoes, I just had to have this one. Besides, ever since 9th grade earth science when I first heard the words oblate spheroid to describe the Earth, I've wanted to use the words "oblate spheroid". I've waited 34 years and now here's my chance.

Featured tomato: Black Sea Elephant

Black Sea Elephant Russian variety known as Black Sea Elephant, not to be confused with Black Sea Man. The seed for this tomato came to me from a trade with a Russian woman living in Germany. The seed came from her parents' plants in Russia. This indeterminate variety is a robust plant and very much the elephant in the tomato patch. The leaves are generally bigger than others and the fruit is large as well. It is a large, RED, beefsteak type where one slice covers a sandwich or burger. The sea is Black, the tomato fruit is red. It is quite robust and a sturdy, dependable producer. I don't suggest growing this one in a container unless you have a 3 gal. container and keep it well fed and watered. Great for slicing and salads, good heirloom flavor and it's only fault seems to be what to do with the rest of the cut tomato after you've taken the slices off for the family's BLTs.    Buy seeds here!

Featured tomato: Kazahkstan Giant

Kazakhstan Giant. This is the first year I've grown this tomato. I traded tomato seeds with someone and this is one of the varieties I got. Giant is in it's name and I suspect it would be a larger tomato if I had grown it in the ground. This is one of the ones I grew in pots because it was the only plant that came from seed and if we were to have hail or bad wind, I brought it under cover. It is an interesting tomato to me because of where it is from. Kazakhstan is so exotic. It is flavorful and productive and can be used for sauce or fresh eating.

Featured tomato: Japanese Black Treffel

JAPANESE BLACK TREFEL MYSTERY TOMATO. OK, I'm going to be very upfront about this tomato. This is the first year I have grown it and the fruit that is being produced is NOTHING like the description. The description is a pouch shaped, pleated tomato which is quite dark black. This is not what I am getting. I am getting large, round, beefsteak type tomatoes that are black and remind me of Carbon, but not quite. So, if you are looking for Japanese Black Trefel, this may not be it. I think the seller mixed up seeds, which is incredibly easy to do because they all look alike. All the Japanese Black are growing fruit not to description. And yes, the picture is Slovene Black, but this is a very similar tomato, except the mystery tomato is larger and I forgot to take a picture of the fruit I'm getting. Whatever this tomato is, it is large, often over a pound, and very flavorful. I will call this Japanese Black Trefel Mystery because I don't know what else to call it.
